Tea Ceremony

Introduction

The tea ceremony, known as “chanoyu” in Japan, is a traditional ritual deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture. It involves the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, a powdered green tea. The ceremony is not just about drinking tea but is a meditative practice that emphasizes harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Participants follow a precise sequence of actions, from the cleaning of utensils to the serving of tea, all performed with mindful attention to detail.

Degustation

A tea ceremony degustation is a refined and immersive experience that allows participants to savor the intricate flavors and aromas of different teas while appreciating the cultural and ceremonial aspects of tea preparation. Typically held in a serene setting, such as a traditional tatami room, the ceremony begins with the host meticulously preparing matcha green tea using precise movements and tools. Guests are invited to observe and participate, often starting with a cleansing ritual to purify the mind and body.

Tea Making

To make a cup of tea, start by boiling fresh water. For black tea, use boiling water, while green or white tea requires slightly cooler water. Place a tea bag or a teaspoon of loose tea leaves in your cup or teapot. Pour the hot water over the tea and let it steep for the appropriate time: 3-5 minutes for black tea, 1-3 minutes for green tea, and 4-5 minutes for white tea. Once steeped, remove the tea bag or strain the leaves. Add sweeteners or milk if you like, and enjoy your freshly brewed tea!
